Missions Conference 2008
Guest Speaker – Jamie Winship

On Sunday morning, Jamie shared a number of stories about his experiences living and working as a Christian in various Muslim nations.  Below are some questions regarding these stories.  On Sunday evening, Jamie planned to tell more stories and give specifics about the Muslim religion.  If you attended Sunday evening and would like to incorporate anything from that message into your questions – please do.

1.        Jamie told us how his family has lived in a number of “dangerous” places throughout their lives.  What thoughts come to your mind when you hear about an American missionary living in Indonesia, Iraq and Jordan?

2.        What do you know about Islam?  How or where did you learn about the religion?

3.        Jamie told a story about how on their first missionary assignment, they went to an island where they didn’t know anyone or the language and essentially did all the wrong things, eventually ending up in court for insulting the god of Islam.  Have you ever begun a relationship with someone by saying or doing all the wrong things?  How did the relationship turn out?  How can God work with misunderstandings to bring people closer to Him?

4.        Jesus said the only thing we really need to know is “who He is.”  Do you think this is the only thing?  What are some other (religious) topics we sometimes argue about with other people/other religions that could be considered secondary to knowing Jesus?  How can knowing Jesus, in effect, answer all of our questions?
5.

6.        Jamie discussed moving to Baghdad with his kids.  How do we reconcile the desires and comforts of our family and friends with what we believe is God’s calling for our life?

7.        Jamie’s son wanted to be “skateboarder for God” and at first didn’t want to go to Baghdad because he wished to skateboard here in America.  Yet when he did go, he was given far more skateboard opportunities in Iraq than he would have had here.  What does this story say about the costs when you say no to God’s plan versus the cost of saying yes?  Describe a time when it would have been easier to say no to God’s calling in your life than to say yes.  How did it turn out?

8.        Do you have any idea how many Muslims live in your community?  Do you know where they hang out or what they do?  How hard would it be for you to start a conversation and befriend a Muslim?  Share some ideas on how you would start this conversation and how you could begin to talk about Jesus.

9.        At this point in your life, would you feel open to God’s plan even if it meant doing something vastly different than you are now or moving to another country as a missionary?
